Sharks and Crafts with Heidi Stavinga:

Dive deep into the world of alcohol inks with local fine artist Heidi Stavinga! She will be hosting a series of demos in the aquarium courtyard for adults and guppies alike, and she will be working on some of her latest pieces in between. Take a quick peek or spend the afternoon observing her craft and asking Heidi questions about her techniques. There will also be a craft table set up for children to try their hand at making their own underwater inspired pieces.

Heidi will be in the courtyard next to the SharkTracker exhibit from 11am-12pm and 1pm-2pm. The children’s craft table will be set up from 10am-3:00pm.

Artist bio:

Every once in a while, someone comes along and breaks the mold! In the art scene, this can be revolutionary. Heidi Stavinga, an Alcohol Ink artist, living and working in Dunedin, has blown this newly popular medium out of the water. Such simple mediums as alcohol and ink become tools to create dynamic pieces that transform seemingly ordinary subjects into beautiful works of art.

Stavinga began experimenting with alcohol inks over 3 years ago and has already been added to many private collections around the world. The process of alcohol and ink allows for a very fluid form of expression; literally and figuratively. Normally used in mostly abstract styles of work, Stavinga has mastered a way of creating very representational works. Her subjects include wildlife, marine life, still life, florals and abstracts.

"I love the challenge of creating an image out of abstract. It feels like a dance of pulling the ink off and adding more ink to create lines and forms on the paper," Stavinga says.

Oftentimes, Stavinga will be creating a piece and a recognizable subject will appear by happenstance and she develops a theme from there.  Along with teaching alcohol inks at the Dunedin Fine Art Center (DFAC) she also teaches privately out of her home studio and hosts several workshops each year. Stavinga has shown in the Stirling Art Studios and Gallery, Dunedin Fine Art Center Art Harvest Festival, DFAC Glad Tidings Exhibition, DFAC Student, Member, Faculty Show and several Art Festivals in Florida.

Her work can be seen here.
