A worldwide ocean celebration is on the horizon — join the fun during the World Oceans Day Family Festival on Saturday, June 3 at Mote Aquarium. Mote’s World Oceans Day event will spotlight the ocean's deep connection to the human spirit and the boundless inspirational power of our natural world's greatest resource. The family festival is free with regular paid admission to Mote Aquarium and is free for Mote Members.

What will be at the event?

  • Enjoy entertinment from Jambo's Journey. Showtimes are 10, 10:30 and 11 a.m. Plunge into the Performing arts with JAMBO LIVE! Join Jenni Kopelman, author of Jambo’s Journey and dance your way around the globe. JAMBO LIVE! is a family friendly, interactive show that celebrates conservation and encourages children to be good stewards of the deep and protect the precious marine life that live in our oceans.
  • Do you have a child ages 2-5? Join in on FREE Deep Sea with Mommy & Me classes! Classes are 20 minutes long and will occur at 10:30, 11, 11:30 and noon.
  • You don't have to dive, just drive! Learn how you can Protect our Reefs at the specialty license plate booth.
  • The following local organizations will be present with educational materials and activities: The Broach School, Longboat Key Turtle Watch, Sarasota Bay Estuary Program, Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum, Conversation Ocean, Save our Seabirds, Tampa Bay Watch, Conservation Foundation of the Gulf Coast, Shark4Kids, Southwest Florida Water Management.
  • From 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., enjoy the sounds of The Garbage Men, who teach sustainability through recycled musical instruments.
  • Akiko the face painter will be back to paint sea creatures on your faces.
  • Kona Ice will be serving up their signature flavored shaved ice in the courtyard.

Give-a-thon in honor of World Oceans Day

Not only can guests enjoy learning about the marine environment in fun and engaging ways during the family festival, but guests can also donate to Mote’s to help the nonprofit, independent marine research institution fulfill its mission of conducting today’s research for tomorrow’s oceans. The Give-a-thon in honor of World Oceans Day is a 48-hour online fundraising event from noon on Friday, June 2 through noon on Sunday, June 4. This year, thanks to the generous support of Gene and Anne Beckstein, your gift will be doubled!

Here’s how the Give-a-thon works:

  • Donate online, by phone or via check from noon to noon on Friday, June 2 until Sunday, June 4 at
  • Gifts will be matched 1:1 up to $25,000 thanks to Gene and Anne Beckstein.
  • Donations are 100 percent tax deductible and will go to support Mote’s mission.
  • There is no minimum. Every dollar counts!
  • Please select the "Unrestricted" designation when making your donation online.

Mote Marine Laboratory is pleased to theme this year's World Oceans Day celebration 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, piggybacking off of Asolo Repertory Theatre's family-friendly summer production. The play, Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, plunges you into the pages of Jules Verne's classic science fiction story. Brought to life through a mix of unforgettable characters, eye-popping projections and interactive technology, this time-honored tale explores our place in time and space, and illuminates the mysteries of the deep blue sea.
