SUMMARY:Earth Day Animal Spot-A-Thon
DESCRIPTION:Earth Day Animal Spot-A-Thon\, Do NASA Science LIVE! Join us in-person for this hybrid event to learn how to identify animals in trail-camera images and contribute to real wildlife conservation research. We will watch a short NASA Science LIVE! training stream\, then practice identifying animals using the computers at Mote SEA. Participants may also bring their own device and join from anywhere. \nWe will compare this Wisconsin-based trail camera project with our local dolphin spotter program to explore how community science supports research in different ecosystems. \nThis community science project uses a network of trail cameras to study wildlife across diverse habitats. By identifying animals and their behaviors in photos\, you help generate critical data used by scientists and land managers to understand ecosystems\, protect species\, and conserve natural resources now and in the future. \n\nUPDATED…Where: SEAside Conference Room (meet outside entrance at 10:45 am)\nWho: Jason Robertshaw\, endlessoceans@mote.org\, (941) 376-5375\nHow much: Free!\nRegister here!

SUMMARY:Sensory SEA
DESCRIPTION:Mote Science Education Aquarium will open its doors an hour early exclusively for individuals with sensory processing differences or autism spectrum disorders. During this event\, Mote will create a welcoming\, calm\, and inclusive environment with sensory-friendly modifications such as softer lighting\, reduced noise levels\, and minimized visual stimulation whenever possible. \nSensory SEA begins at 8:30 a.m.\, and visitors will enter in timed intervals to help minimize crowding. Guests are welcome to continue enjoying the exhibits after the sensory-friendly hour ends at 9:30 a.m.\, when the Aquarium opens to the public. \nSensory backpacks are available free of charge for checkout in exchange for an ID during Sensory SEA events\, as well as during regular operating hours.

SUMMARY:SEA & Do lifelong learning workshops
DESCRIPTION:These workshops invite adult learners to explore marine science through focused in-person lessons and hands-on experiences led by Mote education professionals. Sessions combine clear\, engaging instruction with practical activities that deepen understanding of species identification\, animal biology\, and human impacts. Each class also features insights from Mote experts whose research connects directly to the day’s topic\, creating an active learning environment that supports both skill building and community connection. \n Art & Science of Reef Fish Ecology\nJanuary 16\, 2026\,⋅2:00 – 5:00pm\nDiscover the art and science of reef fish at Mote SEA. This new adult lifelong learning program blends a short reef ecology talk with hands-on iNaturalist training and a simple fish-printing activity. Learn how to observe\, identify\, and document species in our exhibits\, then create your own reef-inspired print to take home. Space is limited for this small-group learning experience. \n That’s A Moray: The Science of SEA-duction\nFebruary 13\, 2026\,⋅2:00 – 5:00pm\nAn adults-only workshop that explores the surprising strategies marine animals use to attract mates\, reproduce\, and raise young. The first hour features an engaging science lecture on ocean courtship and reproductive adaptations\, followed by a hands-on session where participants create an “ocean valentine” using shells inspired by historic sailor’s valentines. The program also includes a “Love Your Ocean” component that highlights everyday conservation actions supporting healthy marine ecosystems. \n Seagrass Stories: Science\, Art\, and Sunlight\nFriday\, March 20\, 2026⋅2:00 – 5:00pm\nExplore local seaweeds and seagrasses in a hands-on\, adults-only workshop inspired by the Herbarium at Mote and Anna Atkins’ historic cyanotypes. A short talk by Mote experts introduces the diversity and importance of these marine plants\, followed by a creative session where participants make their own “sunprints” using real specimens. This small-group experience blends marine botany\, history\, and art in a reflective\, take-home activity. Space is limited. \n Secrets in the Sand: Hidden Life of Beach Debris\nFriday\, April 17\, 2026⋅2:00 – 5:00pm\nExplore the hidden world of beach debris in this hands-on\, adults-only workshop focused on shoreline science and environmental health. A short talk by Mote experts introduces beach conditions\, microplastics\, and the tiny organisms affected by debris and disturbance\, followed by a lab-style activity where participants examine filtered samples up close. This small-group experience blends coastal science\, research tools\, and real-world context to reveal what lies beneath the beach. \n PLEASE NOTE: Because this is an adult lifelong learning program\, only guests 18 years and older will be allowed to participate. Admission to the Aquarium is included in this program. \nRegister Now
