12/26/2022 Turtle was found floating near the beach at Bean Point, Anna Maria Island and was transported to Mote for assessment and rehabilitation. Exam findings include a body temperature of 55 degrees, numerous fibropapilloma tumors present, covered in epibiota (sand, algae, barnacles), and an extremely low blood glucose level. He was given injectable antibioics, fluids with dextrose, and was dry-docked upstairs overnight because he was too lethargic to put in shallow water.
12/27/2022 "Leonard" is now in a rehab. tank in very shallow water. His tank is being slowly warmed up a little bit each day. He ate some squid today when offered.
12/29/2022 Leonard is very lethargic still and is being kept in shallow water. He has shown no interest in eating the last two days, so will continue to receive subcutaneous fluids with dextrose until eating well.
01/07/2023 Leonard has started eating! He seems to have a prefernce for squid. The depth of his tank is being slowly increased as he becomes slightly more active.
01/13/2023 Leonard was sedated for tumor removal surgery. Unfortuantely, due to the severity of his illness and condition, he passed away overnight.
