2/02/2016  Turtle was found inshore near Johnny Walker Reef in Sarasota County.  Turtle was found entangled in monofilament and attached to a crab trap.  Numerous papilloma tumors were also present. 

2/19/2016  Turtle is eating and swimming well. 

2/21/2016  Surgery was performed to remove papilloma tumors.

3/31/2016   TJ is eating well and is extremely active.  Tank is at full water level.  Surgery sites are healing well.  Animal is still receiving antibiotics and other vitamins and supplements. 

4/16/2016  TJ continues to heal well, eat well, and swim strongly.  Blood work is much improved so antibiotics were discontinued. 

5/19/2016  Animal has been medically cleared for release, so will apply for relase with FWC.

5/20/2016  TJ was released off north Longboat Key

Manatees make sounds—in fact, they make five different calls: squeaks, high squeaks, squeals, squeak-squeals, and chirps. They even have “graded” calls, meaning they can adjust a single call to convey more nuances of what they’re doing or how they’re feeling. Think of how a cat adjusts its “meow” when startled, happy, or excited. Mote scientists study manatee vocalizations to better understand the behavior of these imperiled mammals.
