The eclipse may be over but your celestial adventures don’t have to be. Mote Marine Laboratory is excited to announce the dates for their Fall Full Moon Kayak Paddles. These one and half hour paddles take place on Sarasota Bay during twilight hours and educate participants about the importance of our estuaries and their connection to Mote research. This year Mote will offer three separate opportunities for this unique event: 9/6, 11/4, and 12/3.

On Aug. 11, 2017, Mote Marine Laboratory Senior Scientist Dr. David Vaughan was recognized by the United States Coral Reef Task Force for his significant contributions in improving coral restoration techniques and educating a new generation of scientists. Dr. Vaughan most notably pioneered implementation of coral fragmentation techniques to re-skin massive coral species for reef restoration.

Do you love trivia? Mote Marine Laboratory recently launched a new online game called "Who Wants to be a Sea Star?" on mote.org. This game was originally created for Mote’s Oh Baby! exhibit. This fun interactive game is an expanded version of what is currently on display at Mote and is fin-tastic for ocean enthusiasts.

Mote Marine Laboratory’s Board of Trustees is pleased to announce the election of Robert A. Essner as Chairman of the Board, James D. Ericson as Vice-Chairman, and Nigel Mould as Secretary, as well as new Trustees Charles R. Smith and Sandra Stuart. Retired LTG Howard G. Crowell, a Trustee since 2005 serving on Executive and Governance Committees and as Chair of the Finance Committee, has been re-elected as Treasurer. Dr. Michael P. Crosby will continue in his Officer position as President & CEO and G. Lowe Morrison will continue his Trustee service, now as Immediate Past-Chairman.

Mote Marine Laboratory scientists have joined the latest OCEARCH expedition to study great white sharks off New York, with the hope of encountering juvenile sharks to better understand the lives of these important top predators.
In 2016, OCEARCH and a team of participating scientists tagged nine young-of-the-year white sharks (popularly known as great white sharks) during Expedition Montauk in 2016. During this year’s Expedition New York, Aug. 5-25, the team will work to expand their sample size to complete the North Atlantic White Shark Study, which began in 2012. The sample site for this year’s study will be just off of Long Island, New York, where the researchers have confirmed the first known nursery – and likely birthing site – for great white sharks in the Northwest Atlantic.

Registration is now open for the 2017 William R. Mote Memorial Teach-A-Kid Fishing and Ecology Clinic and Snook Shindig, a research-based catch, sample, and release tournament. The children’s clinic, open to the public, is set to take place on Saturday, September 23rd and the Snook Shindig will be an event spanning two days, Friday evening through Saturday, October 6 – 7, 2017.
