Mote reminds public to report sea turtle nests, hatchlings in need

With the recent stormy weather in Southwest Florida, Mote Marine Lab has responded to reports of storm-damaged sea turtle nests and hatchlings washing ashore in Longboat Key through Venice, where Mote monitors sea turtle activities each day of nesting season, May 1-Oct. 31. The weather has recently calmed, but Mote scientists continue to share tips on what to do if you have questions about a nest or hatchlings.

American Elasmobranch Society establishes Eugenie Clark Award

Dr. Eugenie Clark — the world-famous "Shark Lady" who founded Mote Marine Laboratory — was a visionary researcher and a trailblazer for women in science, especially the study of sharks and other fishes. To honor the memory of Clark, who passed away at age 92 on Feb. 25., and to continue inspiring scientists studying elasmobranchs — sharks, skates and rays — the American Elasmobranch Society (AES) in conjunction with Save Of Seas Foundation and Mote, have established the Eugenie Clark Award.

On Friday, July 24, Mote Marine Laboratory — an independent research institution that hosts interns from around the world — celebrated a new partnership with The Nature Conservancy, which gave five college interns a rigorous, marine research-based internship opportunity during the 2014-2015 school year.   Mote and The Nature Conservancy teamed up this year to create the pilot internship program Research Experiences for Undergraduates – LEAF Alumni.
