Sept. 1-2: Support Mote during annual Giving Challenge

Mote Marine Laboratory — which turned 60 this year — is sharing 60 awesome reasons why the community should support the Lab during the 2015 Giving Challenge.

This 24-hour online fundraising event runs from noon on Sept. 1 through noon on Sept. 2. Instead of a telethon, the Giving Challenge is an “Internet-a-thon” that allows the community to support nonprofits in Sarasota, Manatee, Charlotte and Desoto counties, through online donations that will be matched by area organizations.

Watch the video below or visit Mote’s Youtube channel to hear Mote staff share their 60 favorite reasons why Mote rocks!

This year’s Challenge is made possible by the Community Foundation of Sarasota County and The Patterson Foundation with support from the William G. and Marie Selby Foundation, John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, Manatee Community Foundation, and the Herald-Tribune Media Group.

The event features an online leaderboard at www.givingchallenge.org, updated every 60 seconds, allowing the community to give and view the funds donated to each organization in real time.

Mote has participated for three years in the Challenge, raising more than $100,000 each year. This year, thanks to two generous, anonymous donors, Mote will be able to match all gifts from the Giving Challenge on a 1:1 basis up to $40,000.

In addition, Mote and Microsoft will build on their established partnership by working together on joint promotions during the Giving Challenge at Microsoft store at the University Town Center and in the Mote Aquarium.

How it works:

  • Donations must be made online between noon on Tuesday, Sept. 1, and 11:59 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 2, at: www.givingchallenge.org
  • Gifts from new donors (those who did not donate to Mote in the 2014 Giving Challenge, but may have donated to Mote in previous Giving Challenges) will qualify for a $250 match.
  • Mote will additionally match gifts up to $40,000 thanks to two anonymous donors.
  • A debit or credit card must be used.
  • Donations are 100 percent tax deductible.
