Learn about the Future of Florida's Fisheries: The Importance of Mangroves

The Sarasota Bay Fisheries forum — a group for anglers, scientists and others seeking to proactively address fisheries management and science topics in the Sarasota Bay area — is gearing up for its April meeting.

During the meeting, hear scientists from Bonefish & Tarpon Trust discuss the future of Florida's fisheries and the importance of mangroves as nursery habitat.

Bonefish & Tarpon Trust (BTT) is a science-based, non-profit, conservation organization with a mission to conserve and restore bonefish, tarpon and permit fisheries and habitats through research, stewardship and education. Through science-based approaches, BTT is working to protect and enhance healthy, functioning flats fisheries and habitats in the Western Hemisphere, and restore those in decline. This work is being done in collaboration with other institutions and governments.

Dr. Aaron Adams is Director of Science and Conservation for BTT and a Senior Scientist at Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute of Florida Atlantic University. He previously was a Senior Scientist and Program Manager of the Fisheries Habitat Ecology program at Mote Marine Lab. As Director of Science and Conservation, Adams is responsible for formulating and implementing BTT’s science and conservation plan. In addition to his duties at BTT, Adams is also an avid angler and spends considerable effort translating fish science into anglers' terms – including authoring three books and contributing to numerous other books.

JoEllen Wilson, Manager of the BTT's Juvenile Tarpon Habitat Program, is in charge of all things juvenile tarpon-related. This includes juvenile tarpon habitat research projects from South Carolina to the Florida Keys, mapping of juvenile tarpon habitat and educational public presentations.

The free, public Fisheries Forum meeting will take place from 6-7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 13, in the third-floor Buchanan Room at Mote, 1600 Ken Thompson Parkway on City Island, Sarasota, FL 34236.

The Sarasota Bay Fisheries Forum is an independent, community discussion designed to help inform fisheries management and science.
