Mote and FWC release snook into acclimation enclosures in Sarasota Bay

On Tuesday, Aug. 11, scientists of Mote Marine Laboratory and Florida’s Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) placed hatchery-reared juvenile snook into acclimation enclosures in Sarasota Bay – and will release the fish into the wild from the enclosures on Friday, Aug. 14 – as part of an ongoing research project focused on finding the most effective methods to replenish and enhance wild snook populations.

Dolphin treated and released by Mote seen in wild with new calf

“Ginger,” a bottlenose dolphin rehabilitated at Mote Marine Laboratory, was observed with a calf that appears to be her first baby on Aug. 6 in Sarasota Bay by the Sarasota Dolphin Research Program (SDRP), which has monitored Ginger since her birth to a well-known resident Sarasota Bay dolphin, including the period since her successful return to the wild in 2009. Mote reminds public to report sea turtle nests, hatchlings in need

With the recent stormy weather in Southwest Florida, Mote Marine Lab has responded to reports of storm-damaged sea turtle nests and hatchlings washing ashore in Longboat Key through Venice, where Mote monitors sea turtle activities each day of nesting season, May 1-Oct. 31. The weather has recently calmed, but Mote scientists continue to share tips on what to do if you have questions about a nest or hatchlings.
