Whale shark update: transmitter reveals Minnie’s location

A few weeks ago, Mote scientists placed tracking devices on two whale sharks nicknamed “Minnie” and “Colt” offshore of Longboat Key and New Pass in Sarasota. On Saturday, June 30, Minnie’s tag “pinged” and revealed her location about 50 miles north of the Florida Keys, a movement of about 150 miles over three weeks.

Mote reports first sea turtle hatchlings of the year on Longboat Key through Venice

They’re here — the first local loggerhead sea turtle hatchlings of the 2018 season were documented Thursday, June 28, from one nest on Venice and one on Longboat Key, by Mote Marine Laboratory’s Sea Turtle Patrol.

Mote study: Can filter-feeding marine life reduce red tide impacts?

Mote Marine Laboratory scientists are launching a research project this week that will test whether filter-feeding animals and seaweeds can help mitigate the effects of Florida red tide, an algal bloom caused by the naturally occurring microscopic organism Karenia brevis.

Mote scientists tag two whale sharks off southwest Florida

Thanks to whale shark sightings reported by the public off the southwest Florida coast in early June, scientists from Mote Marine Laboratory located five of the polka-dotted, filter-feeding giants and tagged two of them with tracking devices on the afternoon of June 14.

July 6-8: Hunt and taste invasive fish at Sarasota Lionfish Derby

The derby will take place from July 6-8 based at Mote, 1600 Ken Thompson Parkway in Sarasota.

Summer gets clammy: Shellfish restoration study under way
