Artists hailing from as far away as the Philippines will compete in the 5th annual Siesta Key Crystal Classic Master Sand Sculpting Competition presented by Margaritaville on Nov. 14-18. Twelve teams of two will sculpt for four days, creating elaborate sculptures 8 to 10 feet tall as they vie for $15,000 in prize money.
Mote Aquaculture Park — Mote’s sustainable fish farming facility in eastern Sarasota County — launched a pioneering project this fall to advance marine aquaponics: farming seafood while using the wastewater to fertilize salt-loving crops.
Sean Russell, a rising star in marine conservation and outreach, has received a national-level Brower Youth Award for launching an educational campaign about marine debris — a project that ties back to his high school internship at Mote Marine Lab.
Mote Marine Laboratory is pleased to announce that Elaina Todd has been hired as the Lab’s Community Engagement Coordinator. Todd will help Mote share its world-class marine science with people of all ages, particularly by helping underserved and underrepresented groups participate and stay connected with STEM education (science, technology, engineering and math).
Mote Marine Laboratory recently received a generous grant of $7,500 from Wells Fargo for rescue and rehabilitation of endangered sea turtles. This is the company’s third grant for Mote’s care of these federally protected marine reptiles.
