Mote welcomes new communications coordinator

Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium is excited to announce that Kathryn Gentile has recently joined the organization as a Communications Coordinator.  In her role, Gentile will spearhead Mote’s media communications by drafting press releases, coordinating media interviews, organizing public relations events, keeping in constant contact with members of the media, monitoring mentions of Mote in the news, as well as keeping Mote’s media contact list up to date.

Mote launches sustainable farming program with Sarasota County

Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium is proud to announce the Beginning Farmer Education Program in partnership with UF/IFAS Extension Sarasota County with the goal of creating the future Florida workforce in food, agriculture, and natural resources. The 8-week program provides the next generation of farmers with hands-on work experience and practical education under the mentorship of Mote scientists, extension educators, successful entrepreneurs, and local producers.

Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium is pleased to be recognized by the Tampa Bay Business Journal as the #1 revenue-generating cultural nonprofit in the entire Tampa Bay region. The ranking is based on approximately $44 million in revenue in 2022 by Mote.   For nearly seven decades, Mote has conducted world-class innovative research, technology development and science education. A key part of Mote’s mission is public service to translate and transfer science to positively impact restoration, conservation and sustainable use of ocean and coastal ecosystems, while also enhancing the overall ocean literacy of the public. What started as a one-room laboratory in 1955 is now a world-renowned, global marine science institution leading more than 27 diverse marine research, technology development and conservation programs. With over 40 PhD-level scientists, more than 300 total staff members, 1,300 volunteers, and 10,000 members, Mote now consists of eight operational campuses, stretching from Tampa Bay to Key West, including the public outreach arm of Mote’s research, Mote Aquarium.

Next phase of Global FinPrint seeks to improve protection of reef sharks worldwide

With reef shark populations in crisis, Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium and partners from across the globe are updating the seminal shark survey, Global FinPrint, and applying their findings to the design of new marine protected areas (MPAs). The Paul G. Allen Family Foundation is funding the $1.5 million project, building on the first study in an overall effort to recover reef shark populations all over the world.
