There are two Life Support Systems internship locations, one at IC2R3 in Summerland Key, and one at Mote Aquarium in Sarasota. When applying, be sure to specify the location you are interested in.

​​The Life Support Systems Technician Internship at the Elizabeth Moore International Center for Coral Reef Research and Restoration (IC2R3) focuses on life support system (LSS) design, maintenance, and construction. This hands-on position will train interns on the daily operation of LSS required to maintain a healthy supply of seawater to one of the largest land-based coral nurseries in the United States. While at the IC2R3 facility located in Summerland Key, Florida, interns will also participate in maintaining, calibrating, and repairing LSS components within our state-of-the-art outdoor Climate and Acidification Ocean Simulator (CAOS) research system. The LSS intern will also assist researchers with research design and setup, as well as data acquisition and breakdown of research setups upon completion.

Skills gained include:

  • A deep understanding of seawater chemistry 
  • Mechanical, chemical, and biological filtration system design and management
  • Coral nursery facility LSS management
  • Basic coral husbandry
  • Coral reef restoration practices

Applicants should have:

  • A basic understanding of how to use hand tools, experience with power tools is a plus
  • Basic knowledge of electricity is recommended but is not required
  • The ability to lift, carry, and move objects at least 50 pounds is required

This internship position includes periods of time working in wet environments and exposure to sun and heat. 

Multiple part-time positions are available, and the ability to work during weekends and holidays is helpful.
