Mote's Member & Guest Services internship provides a practical, hands-on introduction to working at an AZA accredited institution and public attraction. The intern will serve as part of the Membership team and provide support for both the Membership and Guest Services departments, including assistance with daily aquarium visitors, special events, and programming happening at Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium. Duties within this position will include researching other organizations and utilizing guest feedback to create a strategic plan to engage guests and members of Mote Aquarium in new ways, that enhance the visitor experience. Relevant college majors could include Business Management, Administration, or Hospitality.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Provide general support to the Membership Manager
  • Assist with membership communications including electronic messaging, mailings, and digital / web communication
  • Generate and mail communications to members, including membership cards, renewal letters, and renewal notices
  • Research other cultural and AZA institutions membership and guest events and programming
  • Brainstorm new ideas to engage with members and guests
  • Create a strategic plan to enhance the member / visitor experience at Mote Aquarium
  • Develop a marketing plan related to the guest engagement strategy including social media, email, and digital / printed marketing  

Skills the intern will learn:

  • The intern will have the opportunity to work in support of a world class marine research and conservation team while gaining real word experience working directly with visitors
  • This internship will include direct interaction with the general public at a public attraction allowing them to learn top tier customer service skills
  • The intern will learn various trends in the tourism industry and gain firsthand experience in an attraction/ zoo setting
  • The intern will be able to expand on their writing skills by creating an outlined plan for engaging guests
  • The intern will get to interact and work with Mote staff across multiple teams and departments including, membership, guest services, events, education and marketing
  • The intern will gain administration and organizational skills and learn about non-profit management

Ideal Intern Requirements:

  • Junior or senior level college students or graduates preferred
  • Candidates should have strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work independently in a fast paced setting and manage their own projects as we work towards a common goal
  • Responsible, self-motivated, and focused with outstanding organizational skills and attention to detail is a must
  • Advanced computer skills, including Microsoft Word, Excel, Windows, and other related computer programs necessary
  • Potential interns must be comfortable in an external-facing role, working with executive-level donors and stakeholders
  • Work hours are typically 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays
  • Afterhours events and weekend events might be a part of your experience
  • Interns are to conduct themselves in a professional and appropriate manner on behalf of Mote
  • Excellent phone etiquette is required
