Community Relations and Communications department

Mote’s Community Relations and Communications Department is seeking interns for both photography and videography internships. However, there may be opportunity to combine the positions into one internship. In their statement of interest, applicants should state for which position they wish to apply, or if they are interested in a combination of the positions.

Photography Internship

Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium is seeking a creative, detail-oriented, intern at college level or higher to take, edit and help organize photographs of our research activities, events, education programs and exhibit animals.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Taking photographs of scientific fieldwork and lab work, education programs for all ages, animals and activities in our public Aquarium, formal conferences, fundraising events and other assignments as needed
  • Taking headshots of staff
  • Managing/organizing and updating our photo database
  • Editing photos for multiple platforms (print, press outreach, web site, social media)

Desired Skills:

  • Photography experience/portfolio required
  • Must be comfortable with meeting a “shoot list” at events
  • Must be proficient with Adobe Photoshop or other photo-editing software.
    • Mote uses Adobe Creative Cloud on a Mac. If you require different software you must bring it on your own laptop.
  • Familiarity with Adobe Lightroom
  • Highly organized and detail oriented  
    • We are a science organization and we conduct outreach to the press. Accurate captions and spelling, along with systematic filing, are important to us.
  • Familiarity working with a graphic designer is a plus
  • Ability to work with a team or individually
  • Ability to follow instructions and accept feedback from supervisors and peers
  • Flexible schedule and transportation a plus
    • Most activities occur on weekdays at Mote, but some weekend and off-site work is expected.
  • Willingness to work outdoors and on boats required
  • Underwater photography skills a plus

Videography Internship

  • Taking videos of scientific fieldwork and lab work, education programs for all ages, animals and activities in our public Aquarium, formal conferences and other assignments as needed
  • Managing/organizing and updating video files into our database
  • Editing videos for multiple platforms (press outreach, web site, social media)

  • Own equipment is required
  • Must be comfortable with managing a “shot list” for certain requests
  • Must be proficient with Adobe Premiere Pro or other video-editing software. (Mote uses Adobe Creative Suite on a Mac. If you require different software you must bring it on your own laptop.)
  • Highly organized and detail oriented
  • Familiarity working with a graphic designer a plus
  • Be able to work with a team
  • Be able to follow instructions and also work independently
