The Arthur Vining Davis Library & Archives has been providing resources, reference and research for over 35 years at Mote Marine Laboratory.  Its collections are maintained for the support of marine and environmental research and education.  In addition to its print and special collections the Library maintains a searchable online, open-access institutional repository (DSpace) of Mote staff publications, institutional papers, and items from the historical collections held in its Archives.  New resources are continually added to the print and digital collections.

The library and its archives are open to the public for study and exploration Monday-Friday.  Appointments are suggested.  For further information email, call 941.388.4441 x 333 or 389 or see About the Library & Archives.

Since 1955, Mote staff has produced more than 1,750 Mote Technical Reports (MTRs) and 1,300 peer-reviewed papers compiled in the Collected Papers from Mote Marine Laboratory, Volumes 1 through 17.  These publications demonstrate the valuable research performed at Mote.  Print copies of staff and special collection materials are available for review in the Library.  All books, reports, journals and staff publications held in the Library's main collection are cataloged in the Library Catalog  - links are provided to digitized materials.   Finding aids for the historical items held in the Archives are available in the Library's Archon management system.  A separate searchable Reference List of staff published articles, chapters and books contained in the Collected Papers is also online.  Many of the Mote Technical Reports, Protect Our Reefs documents, Sarasota Bay and Charlotte Harbor investigations, and other key materials have been digitized and are available full-text in the repository.  DSpace content is entered and maintained by the Mote Library.  Mote's Information Services maintains the technical elements of the database.  Discover the latest peer-reviewed publications of the staff in the Library's What's New? section.  Also, visit the various e-collections in the Mote Library's Repository.

Library & Archives Projects:

90 Years of Environmental Data Online:  Since late 2009, the library staff has been conducting a basic processing and digitization project of pertinent Mote Technical Reports, 1930s-40s grey literature from the Bass Biological Laboratory (BBL) of Englewood, Florida, and various other SW Florida environment-related collections dating to the early 1920s.  The process involves the rescue and preservation of unpublished documents and data from various entities, conversion to electronic format, and e-publication of some of the key materials in the Library's open-access repository, DSpace Initial digitization was funded under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA), from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), administered by the Florida Department of State, Division of Library and Information Services.  In 2011 materials processing was supported by the Mote Scientific Foundation.  This project was then expanded and continued in 2013 thanks to funds from The Arthur Vining Davis Foundations.

2013 Arthur Vining Davis Foundations Grant spurs new projects, technologies, and internships: Thanks to a generous grant from the AVD Foundations, the Mote Library & Archives is initiating a number of new projects and making even more of its unique special collections dating back to the 1920s available for research.  The article "Legacies Preserved: Mote collections offer portal into science and history" provides an insight into the special environmental and historical collections.
