School & Public Programs Internship

Mote’s Education Department develops and delivers high quality education programs, using best practices and technology to reach diverse and global audiences. We inspire active involvement in environmental stewardship, foster learning in future generations, and continue to seek out opportunities to improve and expand our programs and ourselves. Each year, Mote’s Education programs reach more than 30,000 participants, inspiring a new generation of marine scientists and enthusiasts. Programs are offered for participants of all ages from pre-K to gray.

Education interns will receive intensive and thorough training in marine science topics, education pedagogy and the work of Mote Marine Laboratory. Mote Education Interns will become more comfortable and confident teachers/presenters, gain curriculum development experience, and make valuable professional contacts for future scientific and/or educational endeavors. When possible, efforts will be for Education interns to have opportunities to shadow or visit with Mote research and/or aquarium staff.

The roles and responsibilities of a Mote Education intern include:

  • Assisting with the development and implementation of science lessons
  • Set-up and break-down of classrooms for education programs
  • Supervising students during classroom and outdoor activities
  • Assisting with public programs such as birthday parties and behind the scenes tours
  • Assisting with field based programs such as dip netting and kayaking
  • Assisting with husbandry & enrichment of education box turtle and diamondback terrapins

Qualifications:

  • Pursuing a degree in education, science, or a related field
  • Strong communication skills
  • Enjoy working with children
  • Comfortable spending days outside and in the water
  • CPR, first aid, and lifeguard certifications are helpful, but not required
  • Teaching experience is a plus, but not required

School & Public Programs interns are accepted in the spring (February, March, April) and fall (August, September, October), with an average internship length of 10 weeks. Hours are primarily Monday-Friday from 8-4, with some weekends and evenings. Schedule may vary depending on the intern’s availability.
