Diet:

Belted sandfish prey on small benthic crustaceans like crabs and shrimp, as well as zooplankton and other bony fishes.

Range & Habitat:

Belted sandfish hide in silt and sand in rocky and reef areas of the Western Atlantic Ocean.

Details:

Belted sandfish are red-brown with darker splotches on their tail fins. Mote’s founder, Dr. Eugenie Clark, studied belted sandfish to learn about one of their most interesting traits. They have both male and female body parts and can switch between these two roles during mating.
