Education Specialist Internship
Situated in the heart of the Lower Keys, Mote Marine Laboratory’s Elizabeth Moore International Center for Coral Reef Research & Restoration (IC2R3) is a fully equipped marine science facility dedicated to marine research and education in the Florida Keys.
Mote Education interns in the Florida Keys play a critical role in delivering all of our programs, from school field trips to residential programs, citizen science, outreach events, and more!
About the Internship
Interns will work in the classroom, in the water and at various offsite locations. Duties include, but are not limited to, developing, teaching, and evaluating marine science activities; supervising & lifeguarding snorkeling and other water-based activities; cleaning and organizing education spaces; daily set-up and breakdown of education activities; and overseeing other activities and programming.
Potential Interns should be pursuing a degree in education or (marine) science, have strong communication skills, and enjoy working with children. They should be comfortable spending long, hot days outside and in the water. CPR & First Aid certifications are required and Lifeguard and SCUBA certifications are strongly preferred.
Though teaching experience is a plus, it is not required. Mote Education Interns will receive intensive and thorough training in marine science topics, education pedagogy, and the work of Mote Marine Laboratory. Mote Education Interns will become more comfortable and confident teachers/presenters, gain curriculum development experience, and make valuable professional contacts for future scientific and/or educational endeavors. Interns may have the opportunity to travel, assist with our snorkel/dive programs, and may have some limited opportunities to shadow or visit with Mote researchers.
