Biography:

Sumit joined the Mote Phytoplankton Ecology group in February 2018. Sumit is interested in fine scale phytoplankton dynamics and the role of phytoplankton in the ocean carbon cycle and quantitative understanding of the perturbations by climate change and human activities on phytoplankton dynamics in the coastal oceans. He takes an interdisciplinary approach in his research, using a combination of bio-optics, remote sensing, HPLC pigment analysis, phytoplankton cell counts, statistical modeling, and laboratory- based experiments.

At Mote, Sumit is working on multi-station time series of phytoplankton data in the West Florida shelf to study the time-varying changes in phytoplankton community (inter-group/inter-functional types variability). He is also involved in designing laboratory experiments to address specific question on Karenia brevis physiology and trophic level interactions.
