As young, barred hamlets inhabit seagrass beds, where they find shelter and food. As they grow, they migrate to coral reefs and rocky areas, where they become more territorial.

Barred hamlets are yellow-white with six brown bars running vertically starting at the eye. They have an iridescent blue ring around their eyes and striping along their body.
