The garibaldi is the State Marine Fish of California. The male garibaldi creates and defends a nest. Females may check out the nests of several males before deciding where to place their eggs.

Size:

The garibaldi can grow to a max size of about 14 inches (36 centimeters).

Diet:

The garibaldi eats many kinds of invertebrates (animals without backbones), especially those attached to surfaces, like sponges, anemones and bryozoans.

Range & Habitat:

These Eastern Pacific fish reside along California to the tip of Baja and southwestern Gulf of California.

Details:

This fish is bright orange across its whole body and almost seems to glow against dark backgrounds. Its body shape is a flattened oval.
