These fishes spend time around rocks and seaweed, including kelp of course! They've been observed in the eastern Pacific from British Columbia to Cape San Lucas, Baja California, including Isla Guadalupe.

Giant kelpfish can change color to better match their surroundings, helping them evade predators. They often rest motionless among kelp or seagrass, swaying with the water like plant leaves. Males fiercely defend their nesting sites, especially during breeding season.
