Permit grow fast as young and reach an average length of 21.5 inches (547 mm) for females and 19.1 inches (486 mm) for males.

Diet:

Permit fish dig in sandy areas for mollusks and crustaceans like crab, shrimp and scallops. However, as opportunistic feeders, they'll also eat other fishes, worms and insects.

Range & Habitat:

Within the western and eastern Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico, these fish live in coastal regions inhabiting sandy, muddy, and grassy areas.

Details:

Permit fish are large, silvery-white fish with dark tails and fins. They have tall, flat bodies, deeply forked tails, and rounded heads. Similar to Florida pompano, they are much larger with a more elongated body. Unlike many fish, they mainly eat crustaceans like crabs and shrimp instead of smaller fish.
