12/22/2020 Turtle “231” stranded as part of the Cold Stun event in New England. 231 was brought to National Marine Life Center where it was then transferred to Mote Marine’s Sea Turtle Hospital by a group called Turtles Fly Too, a non-profit organization of volunteer private pilots. Here the turtle was deemed “Lewis”. Lewis was given fluids and placed in a rehabilitation pool.
12/23/2020 Lewis has been floating so radiographs were taken to examine the lungs, as these cold stun events can negatively impact the turtle’s lungs.
01/07/2021 Lewis is slowly recovering. Lewis is not yet eating but is being force fed oral supplements and an anti-fungal. Lewis is also receiving an injectable antibiotic and fluids once a week.
01/12/2021 Lewis began eating today!
01/17/2021 Lewis continues to eat well and has been discontinued from the antibiotics and the anti-fungal.
02/12/2021 Lewis continues to eat well and is more active. He needs to gain a little more weight before being cleared for release.
02/25/2021 Todd, Eddie, Rusty, Lewis, and Ellen were transported and released by Mote staff at New Smyrna Beach.
