Keys Homeschool Days

Join us each month for a fun-filled, ocean-themed learning experience led by Mote’s professional marine science educators. Participants will work in teams to develop and implement marine science research projects and get the inside scoop on the exciting research going on at Mote. They’ll work on problem-solving, communication and collaboration skills through STEM-based projects while increasing ocean literacy and awareness through experiential learning.
Important Notes: Price for Homeschool Days represents the student plus one chaperone per family. ONLY registered participants are allowed to attend Homeschool Days (no younger or older non-registered siblings). Prior to registering, please review our program policies linked below.

Homeschool Days at IC2R3 (Summerland Key)
- When: monthly from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
- Ages 8 – 11: Aug. 27th, Sept 17th, Oct. 15th, Nov. 19th, Dec. 10th
- Ages 12 – 15: Aug. 26th, Sept. 16th, Oct. 14th, Nov. 18th, Dec. 9th
- Fee: $35 per child per class, get a 15% discount for booking entire semester (price includes required parent/guardian chaperone)
- Note: 1 chaperone per 2 students required (chaperones free)

Class Themes
August 26th and 27th- All About Algae: From Algae Grazers to Zooxanthellae
Learn all there is to know about algae! Students will be taught how to identify different types of algae, get hands-on with an algal grazers experiment, and take home their very own algae cyanotype artwork!
September 16th and 17th- Nautical Nurseries: A Mangrove Kayak Adventure
Students will embark on a kayaking adventure from Mote to the mangroves, where they will learn about shark migratory behavior and the role that mangroves play as nurseries for juvenile ocean animals. PLEASE NOTE: Students MUST dress appropriately for a kayaking excursion.
*October 14th and 15th- The Secret Gardens of the Sea: Seagrass Excursion to Bahia Honda
Join Mote on a snorkeling expedition to Bahia Honda State Park, where students will learn about the importance of seagrass ecosystems and the animals that live within them. PLEASE NOTE: One chaperone per family is required to attend this class. Students MUST bring their own mask & snorkel and dress appropriately for the beach.
November 18th and 19th- Contagious Currents: Coral Health and Disease
Did you know that corals have doctors too? Students will participate in a strategy game that simulates how coral diseases have spread throughout the Keys and learn what Mote is doing to help diseased corals.
*December 9th and 10th- Reef Raiders: Invasive Species and Lionfish Dissection
Participants will learn about invasive species and how they can disrupt the natural ecosystem. Then, students will have the opportunity to dissect a lionfish, one of the infamous invasive species of the Florida Keys, to learn more about fish anatomy and the information that can be gained from fish dissections. PLEASE NOTE: One chaperone per family is required to attend this class.
