Library & Archives Internship
Potential Projects

Working with the intern to determine their goals, internship projects may include processing collections, scanning materials, developing metadata templates, internal outreach, and entering metadata into a digital asset management system.

Requirements

The following qualifications are required:

  • Interest in special librarianship
  • Excellent communication skills
  • High levels of responsibility, flexibility and a desire to learn
  • Strong computer skills

The following qualifications are preferred:

  • Interest in marine science and marine science history
  • Awareness of current archival standards
  • Experience with Adobe Acrobat Pro, Microsoft Office suite, Google suite, Photoshop, etc.

Special Considerations:

  • Internships will be unpaid
  • Interns will be expected to work with an advisor if they wish to receive course credit
  • Interns must work at least 120 hours
  • Work times are flexible upon approval from the librarian

Breder Internship

The Breder Internship at Mote’s Arthur Vining Davis Library & Archives is an opportunity to learn about archival practices and get hands on experience while delving into the papers of an important figure in marine science history: Charles M. Breder, Jr.

Charles Breder was an experimental and behavioral ichthyologist. He is best known for his work on the reproductive, schooling, and social behaviors of fishes, with a special interest in flying fishes and fish locomotion, as well as the evolution and behavior of blind cave characids from Mexico.

Breder served at the director of New York Aquarium and as a curator at the American Museum of Natural History. He was a mentor and long-time friend of Mote’s founding director, Dr. Eugenie Clark. He served as interim director of Mote Marine Laboratory in 1967, and spent many years as a senior research associate and member of the board of directors at Mote.

Project activities will include:

  • Processing archival materials
  • Verifying and updating a finding aid
  • Selection and digitization of materials
  • Working with Mote’s digital asset management system, Mote CLARK

  • High levels of responsibility, flexibility, and a desire to learn
  • Strong computer skills

The following qualifications are preferred: 

  • Interest in marine science and marine science history
  • Awareness of current archival standards
  • Experience with Adobe Acrobat Pro, Microsoft Office suite, Google suite, Photoshop, etc.

Special Considerations:

  • Interns must work a minimum of 200 hours
  • Work times are flexible upon approval from the librarian
  • The internship will take place on-site at Mote’s City Island campus in Sarasota

Interns will receive a $3000 stipend for this position. The stipend will be paid in three payments during the internship: beginning, middle, and end (based on completion of commitment). Applicants must be available for the full duration of the internship to qualify for the stipend. Applicants must be US Citizens or permanent residents to receive payment. The Breder Internship is supported by the Breder Family.  Applications now being accepted for a Fall 2023 start.
