The Coral Health & Disease Research Program conducts work on multiple Mote campuses. The internships below are based at either Mote’s primary campus or Mote SEA, which are both in Sarasota, Florida.

The Coral Health & Disease Research Program focuses on understanding the susceptibility and resilience of corals to major global threats such as climate change and disease, as well as local impacts. The Coral Health & Disease Research Program studies the susceptibility and resistance to these major threats within and among coral species to identify mechanisms that can be utilized to promote reef resilience. The Program uses a wide variety of tools to answer questions about coral health and disease including field surveys, laboratory experiments, mathematical modeling, and molecular applications.
Internships within this program will be laboratory and/or computer based, and may include wetlab experiments as well as molecular applications. Daily duties will include care and maintenance of the coral wetlab space and participation in currently funded research projects. Laboratory assays may include measuring water quality using YSI multiparameter sonde, coral photophysiology, energetics sample processing, image analysis, and and morphometric analyses of coral health states & growth. Preference will be given to students familiar with command-driven computer programs such as R and/or have basic biological statistics skills. Computer based work for interns familiar with R includes skill development in data visualization, open-access code, and relevant biological statistics, and potentially microbiome analyses. Additionally, interns may be asked to participate in education/outreach activities within our program as needed.
Hours are Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm, with required occasional long hours and weekends.
Mote SEA is seeking a motivated intern to join our Coral Workforce Development Lab. This hands-on opportunity is ideal for individuals wanting to gain skills in aquarium/coral husbandry and eager to support coral research and conservation efforts.
As an intern, you will work alongside Mote scientists to learn aquarium husbandry techniques and maintain land-based coral aquaculture systems. Research projects will be focused on enhancing coral production by optimizing aquaculture techniques and refining species-specific care protocols. The internship will provide valuable experience in coral husbandry, data collection, and experimental design.
The position is based at the Mote SEA Coral Workforce Development Lab in Sarasota, FL. Applicants must be available to work weekends as part of their regular schedule. Preference will be given to those without prior coral husbandry or research experience.
