As part of Mote’s International Coral Gene Bank, the Mesophotic Octocoral Facility focuses on low-light octocorals from the Gulf of Mexico. The lab’s primary work centers on the reproduction and husbandry of Swiftia exserta and Thesea nivea, along with ongoing research into improved rearing practices. This internship offers a niche, hands-on experience with a wide variety of learning opportunities.

Intern responsibilities include caring for adult and juvenile corals, monitoring for spawning events, and assisting with gamete collection. Daily tasks involve aquarium husbandry, coral treatments, recruit care, and water quality testing. Depending on project activity, interns may also participate in research related to octocoral husbandry and rearing, including 2D/3D imagery, data analysis, and digital file management (note: research projects are not always active).

We are seeking applicants who are able to work independently in a focused environment. A reliable means of transportation is required, as well as availability on weekends. Experience with closed-system aquarium husbandry is preferred but not required. This is a full-time 10-week unpaid internship based at the Mote Aquaculture Park in Sarasota, Florida.
