Outreach Center Operations Internship
Operations interns at Mote’s Marine Science Education & Outreach Center on Anna Maria City Pier will have the unique opportunity to become immersed in a multitude of the daily operational elements of a nonprofit, AZA-accredited facility. This role will learn crucial professional skills in four operational domains including guest services, informal education, community outreach, and aquatic animal husbandry.
Location
Mote’s Marine Science Education & Outreach Center is located on the Anna Maria City Pier, at 100 North Bay Boulevard in Anna Maria, Florida.
Responsibilities
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Greet all guests with a smile and friendly demeanor
- Provide information on Mote’s research and public outreach programs
- Professionally answer guest inquiries and effectively address requests or complaints
- Communicate effectively with staff, managers, and volunteers
- Assist in the daily husbandry of animals including:
- Preparation of diets and feeding, observation and recording of daily/medical care, maintenance of animal exhibits/behind the scenes space, testing water quality parameters, and accurate record keeping.
- NOTE: this program deals with invertebrates and small teleosts. There are NOT marine mammals or sea turtles at this location.
- Maintenance of retail spaces and operating a POS system for merchandise sales
- Performing opening and closing procedures as directed
Applicant Requirements
- Must have related coursework or a recent degree in biology, marine science, tourism, or any other category related to the role
- Must have effective communication and organizational skills
- Genuinely enjoy working with the public
- Must be able to lift 50lbs
- Must be able to able to walk, stand, bend, or crouch for extended periods of time
- Capable of working around bleach or other sanitizing chemicals
- Tolerance working with wet hands, feet, and clothes regularly
Schedule and Commitment
- The Education Outreach Center Operations Program is a 10 week, 40 hours/week commitment.
- Typical days are from 8:15am-5:15pm, with a daily schedule of Tuesday-Saturday
- The Center on the pier is open 365 days a year, including weekends and holidays. Additional hours may be required on occasion.
