Veterinary Science Internship

Responsibilities: The goal of this internship is to expose the student to all aspects of aquatic veterinary medicine and help prepare them for a career in aquatic veterinary medicine. When working with the veterinarian, the intern will shadow clinical cases and medicine. This includes weekly rounds, assessment, triage, giving necessary care as directed by the animal care staff, animal transport (if needed), and maintenance of records and databases.

Additional roles when working with the veterinary team will include:

  • setting up supplies/equipment prior to procedures
  • maintenance of stock/supplies in the veterinary hospital, clean-up after procedures, cleaning/packing/sterilizing instruments
  • assistance with sample preparation and related laboratory paperwork.

The intern will also spend varying amounts of time working with the aquarium’s quarantine team, stranding and necropsy, and the mammal and reptile training and husbandry areas. Applicants must be flexible and willing to alter their schedule pending cases and other situations that could arise last-minute. Additionally, all interns are responsible for a project of their choice during the course of their internship.
