A worldwide ocean celebration is on the horizon — join Mote Marine Laboratory during its first World Oceans Day Celebration in Boca Grande June 11.
World Oceans Day, nationally celebrated on June 8, is an international day of ocean celebration that provides an annual opportunity to honor, appreciate and help conserve the world’s oceans. Our oceans help regulate our climate, provide us with the oxygen we breathe and feed millions of people every year.
This year, Mote will kickoff a World Oceans Day Celebration in Boca Grande with a fun and educational family festival dedicated to Earth’s oceans and the wondrous creatures living there.
“Here at Mote, we are excited to share our World Oceans Day Celebration with our Boca Grande family,” said Stacy Alexander, Mote’s Community Relations & Communications Assistant Vice President. “This Celebration is a family-friendly, fun and informal setting where people of all ages can come out, have a great time and learn about the many ways they can help protect our oceans and the animals that call it home.”
While marine and coastal research has always been Mote’s core function, its endeavors continue to emphasize the need for this research to have a positive impact on the conservation and sustainable use of marine resources for the benefit of our local, national and international communities. This World Oceans Day Celebration allows children to explore the marine world and excite their passions for oceans and become better stewards of the coastal environment.
This year’s family-friendly event will include educational activities that focus around human impacts on the ocean and ways to reduce, reuse and recycle.
The Mote Mobile exhibit will be at the festival with hands-on activities — including a sea life touch tank.
The free event will take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 11 at 480 East Railroad Ave., Railroad Plaza, Boca Grande.
