Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium is very pleased to welcome Dr. Whitney Greene as its new veterinarian. Greene will provide medical care and treatment for all resident animals at Mote  Aquarium and rehabilitation patients at Mote’s hospitals for sea turtles and cetaceans (dolphins and whales). More than 100 marine animal species are found at Mote Aquarium.

Greene joins Mote after serving as the Staff Veterinarian at Buttonwood Park Zoo in Massachusetts. At the zoo, she provided care for various species, including elephants, marine mammals, reptiles, fish and more. In addition to veterinary care, Greene developed a new nutrition program, standard operating procedures for several aspects of the zoo’s accreditation application for the Association of Zoos & Aquariums, and new internship and teaching programs for undergraduate and veterinary students.

Greene also has experience with research and teaching. She earned her Master of Science in Marine Biology while conducting research on comparative immunology, and she is the first author on several research papers in peer-reviewed journals. Greene obtained her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Western University’s College of Veterinary Medicine in 2016, and she has also served as an adjunct faculty member at University of Massachusetts Dartmouth and Salve Regina University.

“I’m very excited to join Mote’s team of passionate Aquarium biologists, marine scientists and animal rehabilitators,” said Greene. “I look forward to ensuring the continuation of excellent care for the Aquarium collection, as well as the opportunity to assist our local marine life by providing emergency care for stranded sea turtles and cetaceans in Mote’s hospitals.”

“Dr. Greene is eager and energetic, and she is a welcome addition to our experienced team of animal care staff,” said Dan Bebak, Mote Vice President for Aquarium, Education and Outreach. “Mote Aquarium connects the exciting, world-renowned marine research conducted by our scientists with our visitors, so Dr. Greene’s passion for research and education, in addition to her skills as a veterinarian, made her a perfect fit.”
