The issues our oceans face today are extremely complex and involve many different disciplines and perspectives. The Marine Policy Institute (MPI) at Mote Marine Laboratory was formally launched in 2006 to improve the connection between science and society.  MPI serves as an independent, objective entity within Mote that analyzes and translates marine science results, findings, and related information into formats useful for the public—particularly decision-makers and members of concerned communities. This includes special reports designed to offer assessments and advice on law and policy enabling tools most responsive to advances in scientific knowledge.

MPI reports directly to the CEO/President of Mote in order to have independence from the science complex.  It also closely coordinates and collaborates with Mote’s Vice President for Sponsored Research & Coastal Policy Programs.
