At Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium, we believe that meaningful connections with our oceans should be available to everyone. We work continuously to improve the accessibility and inclusivity of our spaces, exhibits, resources and programs. We are committed to listening, learning, and growing so that all those who connect with Mote feel safe, supported, and inspired by the wonders of marine science.

This page highlights the accessibility features of Mote Science Education Aquarium (SEA), our primary visitor campus. Mote SEA is located at 225 University Town Center Drive, Sarasota, Florida. For details on other Mote campuses, please check our Locations Page.

Mote Marine Laboratory is proud to be designated an Autism Friendly Business by the Center for Autism & Related Disabilities at the University of South Florida. This partnership helps us strengthen our understanding of the needs of neurodivergent guests through regular staff training, guidance, and best practices tailored to individuals with autism spectrum disorder and sensory-processing considerations. This training empowers our team to better support guests who may benefit from quieter spaces, adaptive resources, or a more intentional approach to their visit.

Wheelchairs

We offer complimentary manual wheelchairs for guests on a first come first serve basis. Guests that may require a wheelchair should request it with the outside Guest Services associates upon arrival.

Elevators, escalator, stairs

Mote SEA includes an escalator that transports visitors from the first floor atrium to the third floor. Elevators and stairs are available on all three floors and are marked on the map above.

Our audio tour offers detailed exhibit descriptions and navigational guidance designed to enhance the experience for guests who are blind or partially sighted.

Sensory backpacks

We have a limited number of sensory-friendly backpacks available for checkout at the admissions window, at the greeter, and inside at the info desk (free with ID exchange).

Sensory SEA events

On select dates, Mote SEA opens its doors an hour early exclusively for individuals with sensory processing differences or autism spectrum disorders. During this event, Mote creates a welcoming, calm, and inclusive environment with sensory-friendly modifications such as softer lighting, reduced noise levels, and minimized visual stimulation whenever possible.

Language

Mote Science Education Aquarium exhibits are presented in both English and Spanish. We also offer Spanish-language education programs upon request. To learn more or schedule a program, please contact us at education@mote.org.

Other common questions

May I bring my service animal or pet?
Service Dogs as defined by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) are welcome. Pets, Emotional Support, and Therapy Animals are strictly prohibited. Please click here to review the ADA Guidelines prior to your visit.
Do you offer accommodations for nursing mothers?
Yes. Please contact any Guest Services associate for access to a private space to nurse. You can find Guest Services associates at the information desk near the three STEM Teaching Labs on the first floor of Mote SEA. You can reach out in advance to: guestservices@mote.org or 941-388-6683 (941-388-MOTE).
