04/24/2021 Turtle was found floating and unable to dive in the Sarasota Bay Intracoastal Waterway east of Jewfish Key. Turtle was rescued and transported to Mote by officers from Manatee County Sheriff's Office. Upon arrival, "Calypso" was examined, weighed, and had blood drawn. Based on her behavior, Mote staff suspect low levels of Red Tide exposure/toxcity. She was given subcutaneous fluids with Dextrose and placed in a rehab. pool in very shallow water.
04/25/2021 Calypso bit at but spit out clam and squid. She did eat blue crab when offered!
04/29/2021 Calypso is eating well. She prefers blue crab, squid, and shrimp instead of fish. She is more active, but remains in shallow water due to her still being "floaty"/positively buoyant.
05/14/2021 Calypso is eating everything offered and her diet is being increased daily. She continues to have buoyancy issues so she is still being kept in a rehab. pool in shallow water.
05/17/2021 There was some necrotic tissue seen in animal's feces, so oral antibiotic therapy was initiated.
05/29/2021 Buoyancy issues continue. Radiographs show gas in the intestines. Calypso is eating well and defecating normally.
06/25/2021 Calypso was moved to a large rehab. pool where the water depth can be increased significantly to observe if her buoyancy improves in a bigger, deeper environment.
07/17/2021 Calypso is active and eating well. She is still in the larger rehab. pool, but her buoyancy issues have not improved.
07/28/2021 Calypso was moved back downstairs into a shallow rehabilitation pool so she is able to comfortably rest on the bottom.
07/30/2021 Animal was transported to Veterinary Surgical Center in Sarasota for a CT scan.
09/01/2021 Calyspo was sedated and had a procedure to remove/aspirate air from her body cavity.
09/03/2021 Animal is able to rest more flat in shallow water, but is still positively buoyant if water level is increased.
09/21/2021 Calypso was again moved to a large rehab. pool where the water depth can be increased significantly to observe if her buoyancy improves in a bigger, deeper environment.
09/30/2021 Calypso is now able to rest flat on the bottom of the pool even with increased water depth! She continues to be active and eat well.
10/15/2021 Tank depth of large rehab. pool was increased to full. Calypso continues to eat well and maintain neutral buoyancy in large pool.
11/10/2021 Calypso was medically cleared for release. She was trasnported and released at Bonita Beach by Mote staff and interns.
