April 16: City Island coastal clean up

Mote Marine Laboratory high school interns invite fellow students ages 14-18 for an island clean up 8:30 a.m. to noon Saturday, April 16.

Check in will begin at 8:30 a.m. by the whale statue near the entrance to Mote Aquarium (Mote Marine Laboratory, 1600 Ken Thompson Pkwy, Sarasota, FL 34236).

Participants will be working in small groups with Mote's high school interns to rid City Island of marine debris.

There will be light snacks and drinks provided. Participants are asked that to bring water, a fun attitude and a willingness to meet new friends. Students will be able to earn community service hours from this clean up.

“The students that we work with at Mote are truly amazing,” said Kasey Gaylord-Opalewski, Digital Learning Coordinator at Mote. “They are wise beyond their years. It is great to see them mentor other teens at the events they plan like teen Science Cafés and coastal cleanups. It's wonderful to see youth inspire youth and take it upon themselves to get involved with the community.”
