Written by: Elsbeth Waskom

Goodwill’s 2017 lecture series, Women EmPOWERed, will feature Mote Marine Laboratory Senior Scientist Dr. Kevan Main, an aquaculture (fish farming) expert.

Main’s talk will be held at 5:30-6:30 p.m. May 23 at the Lakewood Ranch Goodwill, 8750 E State Road 70.

Registration is free but required. Register here.

Main will speak about her journey as a woman in science, highlighting the development of her career and the sacrifices and opportunities that female scientists face in balancing a successful career and family life. She will discuss new directions that her research has taken as she continues to work toward developing methods to produce sustainable seafood for U.S. consumers.

Main, an award-winning Senior Scientist at Mote and Director of Mote Aquaculture Research Park, works to develop sustainable fish farming practices and technology for producing seafood in addition to helping restore diminishing fisheries.

In February 2016, Main received the Fellow of the World Aquaculture Society Award.  In October 2016, she was honored by the White House as one of 12 Champions of Change for Sustainable Seafood. Over her career, she has conducted aquaculture work in countries throughout Asia and served as the first director of the U.S. Department of Agriculture regional aquaculture center in Hawaii, which is known as the Center for Tropical and Subtropical Aquaculture. In 2012 she served as President of the World Aquaculture Society.

Main is a wonderful role model for girls interested in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) fields. Register here to attend her talk in the Women EmPOWERed lecture series.
