Mote thanks community for successful Giving Challenge Sept. 20 and 21, 2016

The annual community-wide Giving Challenge on Sept. 20 and 21 raised vital funds for hundreds of Southwest Florida nonprofits.

Mote Marine Laboratory is thanking the community for making more than 400 gifts totaling $43,858 to the Lab online, along with several generous offline gifts. Out of close to 600 organizations, Mote ranked 15th for dollars raised.

Mote also won a $100 Twitter prize from the Community Foundation of Sarasota County for its tweet: “36 Ph.D. scientists, 25 research programs, 77 research staff. #BeTheOne to give during #GivingChallenge16! http://bit.ly/2cTyMcJ

This year Mote partnered with Cat Depot for the Best Nonprofit Partnership grant opportunity.  Through this partnership, the two organizations promoted each other’s work, particularly highlighting their efforts to rehabilitate sick and injured animals.

A final tally of funds will be provided in the coming weeks, when the Community Foundation of Sarasota County will confirm the matching funds from this year's Challenge and Mote's total will also be matched up to $25,000 by generous supporters Gene and Anne Beckstein.

The 2016 Giving Challenge is presented by the Community Foundation of Sarasota County with giving strengthened by The Patterson Foundation, as well as support from Manatee Community Foundation, John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, William G. and Marie Selby Foundation and the Herald-Tribune Media Group.

Mote — an independent, nonprofit marine science institution — offers a huge THANKS to everyone who supported the Lab and, in turn, gave back to the sea.
