Publix presents Mote with grant for marine science education

Publix Super Markets Charities presented a $13,500 grant to Mote Marine Laboratory Thursday, Aug. 7, to help underserved children in the Sarasota area participate in Mote’s professionally developed, informal and entertaining marine science education programs.

Grant funds will be used to bring K-12 students to Mote to participate in established, interactive marine science and coastal ecology educational programs that aim to increase ocean literacy, interest in science and environmental appreciation.

Programs will feature laboratory or field experiences based on local marine and coastal ecosystems, incorporating current scientific and conservation research into an age-appropriate, standards-based curriculum. Programs will also highlight the world-class research taking place at Mote.

“We are interested in looking for ways to help give children experiences that they might not otherwise have, so we support Mote in giving those fun, outside-of-the-norm experiences to children in the Sarasota area who wouldn’t otherwise have the opportunity,” said Kelly Williams-Puccio, Executive Director of Publix Supermarket Charities. “We feel that giving children fun enrichment opportunities, like Mote does, is incredibly important for their education.”

Mote focuses on educating the next generation of scientists and helping the public become more ocean literate. Every year, Mote’s programs serve more than 23,000 students and thousands of adults.

Informal science education is a key part of Mote’s 2020 Vision & Strategic Plan, the blueprint guiding Mote’s efforts in marine research, education and outreach designed to meet the critical needs facing our oceans and positively impact society for years to come.

“We are incredibly thankful for Publix’s continued support of Mote’s mission to help improve educational opportunities for underserved children in our community,” said Aly Busse, Assistant Vice President for Education at Mote. “This grant will help us inspire interest in marine science and our environment and increase ocean and science literacy among children.”
