Mote scientist receives award to study the survival of caught-and-released sharks

In all the world’s oceans it is hard to find a group of animals as charismatic and intriguing as sharks. A common historical perspective was that “the only good shark is a dead shark”, and thus shark fishing has increased on a global scale. In reality, sharks play a critical role in marine ecosystems, and it is essential to maintain shark populations in order to preserve healthy ocean ecosystems.

Longboat Key Turtle Watch supports Mote’s education and turtle programs

On Friday, Dec. 11 the Longboat Key Turtle Watch donated $8,002 to help advance Mote Marine Laboratory’s education and sea turtle programs. The funds will be distributed among the Lab’s Hatchling Hospital, Sea Turtle Rehabilitation Hospital, Sea Turtle Conservation and Research Program and Education Department.

Mote campaign progress: $2 million gift for Keys building, $40-million campaign milestone

The Rick and Nancy Moskovitz Foundation has donated $2 million toward Mote Marine Laboratory’s new research and education facility in the Florida Keys — the largest donation for the planned building to date. The donation also marks a major milestone for Oceans of Opportunity: The Campaign for Mote Marine Laboratory: More than $40 million in commitments have been raised toward the $50 million goal of this Lab-wide fundraising effort, which was announced publicly in January 2015.
