Meet the trailblazer who founded Mote Marine Laboratory
A scientist ahead of her time: That’s the best way to describe Dr. Eugenie (Genie) Clark, who founded Mote Marine Laboratory in 1955.
Known to many as the “Shark Lady,” Genie would have turned 100 this year. In the 1950s, she'd already discovered that sharks are complex and fascinating rather than mindless and frightening, and that women belong in marine science. Her trailblazing mindset has led to many of Mote's greatest impacts today and inspires our progress toward an even brighter tomorrow.
