The Marine Policy Institute (MPI) furthers the mission of Mote Marine Laboratory by improving the connection between science and society by providing timely, credible policy assessments and advice to decision-makers and stakeholders. MPI develops, coordinates and conducts research projects that seek to better connect the human dimensions of marine ecosystems - the legal, economic and social aspects - and their relevance for policy decisions.

Interns would assist in scientific and policy analysis, track policy at the local, state, and national level and research and report on marine policy measures and their impacts upon society. MPI is actively engaged with each of the seven research centers within Mote. Initial priorities include Florida red tide, sea level rise, marine zoning, fisheries management issues and a sustainable seafood initiative. Upper-level undergraduate, post-graduate and graduate students are encouraged to apply. Interns should have a well-rounded background in marine science, marine and environmental policy and the social sciences.

Mote Marine Laboratory offices are open Monday - Friday, 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. MPI interns are offered a flexible, part-time schedule.

The Marine Policy Institute does not currently offer summer internships. Positions are typically scheduled on a semester basis in the fall and spring.
