This turtle stranded on Manasota Key. It is extremely emaciated, anemic, and covered in barnacles and algae. It has lost a large amount of weight and its shell is extremely soft. Very similar to the other anemic loggerheads that we have seen this summer. 8/21 Turtle is slightly weaker and less responsive. Being tube fed. 8/22 Turtle died this morning. Necropsy is scheduled for tomorrow. 8/23 Necropsy revealed severe pneumonia, liver abscesses, granulomas, and excess coelomic fluid.

Sea turtles lay thousands of nests on southwest Florida beaches each summer. On Longboat Key through Venice, Florida, Mote scientists have documented sea turtle nesting since 1982!
