10/19 Turtle, a mature male, was found this afternoon in the surfzone off of Longboat Key. It was rescued and brought to the Sea Turtle Rehabilitation Hospital for medical care. Turtle is lethargic and emaciated, but not badly covered in barnacles or algae. Possibly Lethargic Loggerhead Syndrome. Have begun treatment, but turtle is too weak to be placed in water, so is under a misting sprayer until he is stronger. 10/20 Turtle is somewhat more responsive today. We think this may actually be red tide toxicosis, although it is not a typical case and there is no red tide in the immediate area. We will send off a blood sample on Monday for brevetoxin analysis. 10/22 Turtle may be slightly stronger today, but not able to lift its head to breathe. 10/24 Breathing is somewhat improved. Have started tube-feeding the turtle. 10/28 Turtle has shown no change in the last few days. Test results show very low levels of red tide toxin, too low to be causing the problem. Continuing to treat agressively. 10/31 Still not much change, but we have identified lungworms in the turtle, only the third case ever found in sea turtles, and all three were at the Sea Turtle Rehabilitation Hospital. A manuscript was recently submitted for publication regarding the first two cases. 11/7 The turtle continued to do poorly and finally died this morning. Initial necropsy provided very few answers regarding the cause of death. Further lab tests and histopathology are being undertaken, but it appears to be a toxicosis of some type, other than brevetoxin.
