Released April 28, 2006 at Englewood Beach
This juvenile green turtle was found floating under a dock in Boca Grande. It has rigid muscular paralysis, probably due to red tide toxicosis. It is extremely dehydrated and has some kidney issues. Treatment has been initiated. 10/12 Turtle is somewhat better. Muscular paralysis is subsiding and turtle is now in shallow water. 10/17 Turtle is in somewhat deeper water and is swimming a little. Not yet eating. 10/25 Turtle is still not eating. Still some neurological symptoms, but doing better. 10/27 Turtle ate for the first time this afternoon. 11/2 Turtle is now eating very well with no more obvious neurological symptoms. 11/11 Appetite is even better and turtle is gaining weight. 11/18 Turtle is doing very well. 12/1 Turtle continues to do well. 12/9 Still doing well. 12/16 Turtle is having some kidney problems again and is being treated accordingly. 12/20 Kidney problems are responding to treatment. 1/2/06 Have changed antibiotics for kidney infection and seems to be doing well. 1/13 Kidney problem seems much better. Continuing with treatment. 1/24 Continues with slow improvement. 2/1 Seeing continued slow improvement. 2/11 More of the same. 2/22 Kidney function seems to be back to normal. Appetite is good. 3/5 Continuing to do well. 3/12 Continuing much the same. 3/22 Still doing well. 3/29 Turtle continues to do well. 4/11 Everything continues well. 4/24 Turtle is completely back to normal and we have applied for release later in the week. Turtle was tagged this morning in preparation for release. 4/26 Turtle has been approved for release later this week. 4/28 Turtle was released this morning from Englewood Beach.
