Mote Marine Laboratory is offering special research-based internship opportunities (MREASU) for American Samoan undergraduate students. The MREASU internship program is designed to provide undergraduate students hands-on opportunities to conduct scientific research under the mentorship of Mote scientists. Students gain experience in scientific research, science communication and may attend research seminars and workshops on career skills.  The experience gained through a Mote research internship will enhance both the knowledge and experience needed for entry-level employment as well as graduate studies within related fields.

Mote will offer 2 paid research training experiences for the summer of 2015.

Research Programs & Participating Mentors

Dr. Emily Hall, Ocean Acidification Program

This program focuses on effects of ocean acidification (OA) and climate change (CC) on marine organisms and their ecosystems. Potential projects include the effects of OA and CC on corals, bivalves, or other important marine organisms. MREASU students will predominantly be working with one of two OA and CC testing facilities, assisting with field collection of samples, data entry, and laboratory analysis. Some travel to the Summerland Key field station might be required.   Some chemistry experience preferred

Dr. Kevan Main, Marine Aquaculture

The Marine & Freshwater Aquaculture Research Program is developing innovative technologies to produce marine and freshwater fishes to meet our growing national demand for seafood and to restock depleted recreational and commercial stocks. Research is directed toward designing and testing filtration technologies for sustainable recirculating systems AND toward developing spawning, larval, fingerling and growout culture methods for marine or freshwater species. Spawning and rearing technologies for marine fishes is currently focused on the following species: Common and Pacific snook, Florida pompano, southern flounder, and red drum.
