The progression of Caribbean yellow-band disease — a widespread killer of reef-building corals — can be significantly impeded by chiseling a “firebreak” around the diseased coral tissue, but more research is needed to maintain the firebreak long-term, reports a peer-reviewed research paper published this week in the journal PeerJ.

The grey mullet (Mugil cephalus) is just one of the six species selected for European program DIVERSIFY, a five year project to advance the knowledge and its practical application in the culture of new and emerging finfish species. Interest in the culture of grey mullet as a high quality source of protein has increased in Europe due to the fact that this fish species requires little or no dietary fish meal. Moreover, the salted and dried roe (bottarga) from females is considered a high prized delicacy and is an added value product from the culture of this species.

As part of Mote's efforts to share ocean literacy with more than 20,000 students a year, Mote summer camps helps students gain steam in STEM education (science, technology, engineering and math) even when school is out. Mote summer campers can recover lost underwater robots in a science-y simulated mission, be immersed in hands-on experiments and even “test the waters” of various marine science careers.
