AZA Florida Reef Tract Rescue Project

Mote Aquarium cares for and displays animals from The AZA-Florida Reef Tract Rescue Project (AZA-FRTRP), inviting guests to learn about the power of collaboration and conservation.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission identified Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) member institutions as prime candidates to receive and manage corals rescued from stony coral tissue loss disease in The Florida Reef Tract. AZA created The FRTRP network in November 2019, and Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium was one of the first institutions to receive Rescue corals. Mote Aquarium additionally is one of four institutions that provides leadership to the network of over 20 zoos and aquariums holding rescue corals.

Mote Aquarium’s Rescue Coral Lab holds and displays over 75 colonies of AZA- FRTRP corals. Additionally, The Aquarium Conservation Laboratory at Mote Aquarium aquacultures approved maintenance animals for The AZA-FRTRP. These animals are regularly shared with AZA-FRTRP member institutions, to help care for their rescue corals.
